Many people work in the LED lighting industry, but it is difficult to enter sports lighting field, because is it thought a complex and difficult field. Unlike LED high bay, you may just consider the lumen, efficiency, wide or narrow beam angle. Indeed, LED sports lighting requests more professional knowledge on the lighting standard, lighting configurations, and also well understand to judge lighting performance. I’m going to share with you what we should consider when choosing a suitable sports light.
Lighting Performance
Most people would like to replace a project with similar power or lumen directly; it’s the easy way to judge what we need; it’s basic information, but not all.
The most important thing we should consider is the lighting performance. The lighting performance does not mean brightness only, but is also related to uniformity, BUG control (Backlight, Uplight, Glare), light quality, etc. Usually the field size, the mounting height, the pole distance, etc. will affect the final lighting effect. Only when we make a lighting simulation for a certain project will we know its performance entirely. That’s the reason we never directly tell our clients which product is best for them. So based on this objective information, we can choose different wattage and beam angles and try to adjust the lighting point on the ground to have them reach the best effect.
Lumen and system efficiency
Sometimes, the luminaire gets high efficiency, but the luminous intensity on the ground is bad, which means the light is not focused and dispersed, and cannot light in a far position.
Uniformity
Good uniformity will help the player maintain a steady performance in the game. The higher the lux level needed, the better the uniformity should be.
BUG control
The BUG rating determines how much light trespass a luminaire produces.
Backlight control is important for residential area because too much light pollution into the neighbors’ windows will disturb their sleep and make people tired.
Uplight will also reduce general light pollution. You may find strong light from your apartment, there will be never a dark night or peace sleep.
Glare control is essential for players on the field; with good glare control, both the spectators and players will feel comfortable.
With a good optic design and a well-designed sports light, you can easily achieve the best lighting performance with less simulation work.
Installation and maintenance
In large stadiums, where the high-power sports lights are mounted on high poles, luminaire weight and size are important for the pole. Smaller size will need smaller wind resistance, so the pole can be less weight capacity and cost.
Quick installation will also help reduce the project budget, so an easy mount and less adjustment to the LED modules will reduce installation time. For future regular maintenance, we also suggest the client mount the drivers in a power distribution cabinet on the bottom of the pole; a driver mounted remotely can be replaced easily.
