Wildlife Lighting - Turtle Friendly & Energy Efficient

Wildlife Lighting - Turtle Friendly & Energy Efficient

Alis Choi

Did you know that light pollution has a substantially harmful impact on many types of wildlife? For hundreds of years, artificial light had a damaging effect on wildlife by disturbing their natural behavior, and causing injury, and death to thousands of migrating birds, sea turtles and other reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and invertebrates.

These artificial lights at night will attract wildlife such as turtles and frogs, to areas considered harmful, such as roadways and commercial locations. The light emitted from AGC wildlife-friendly lighting is almost invisible to these animals; they cannot see the light and are therefore not drawn toward buildings, bollards, and parking lots. LED wildlife lighting is available in urban lighting like LED bollards, wall packs, post top lights, and area lighting like LED flood lights, garage lights, etc.

Utilizing long wavelength light at 560 nanometers or longer, which appears amber or red, will prevent sea turtle disorientations and protect human health. These kinds of lamps will not disturb nocturnal animals. It will also not lead them forward towards an area they do not want, especially if you live near a coastal or wildlife area.

The red light not only keeps the animal population healthy at night but also provides cost benefits. Since there isn’t as much wasted light for non-task-specific requirements, lighting power at night is much lower. It is a win-win for both the environment and your bottom line.

Take our BL04 solar bollard light with red light as an example:
