What are Dark Sky LED Lights?
Dark Sky LED approved lights refer to a specialized type of outdoor lighting designed to minimize light pollution.
Why are Dark Sky LED lights important?
Light pollution can have a number of negative effects, including:
Interfering with astronomy: Light pollution makes it difficult or impossible to see stars and other celestial objects, which can hinder astronomical research and enjoyment of the night sky.
Disrupting wildlife: Many animals rely on darkness for navigation, reproduction, and predation. Light pollution can interfere with these activities and harm wildlife populations.
Harming human health: Light pollution can suppress melatonin production, which can disrupt sleep patterns and lead to other health problems. Dark Sky compliant fixtures ensure that outdoor lighting is used efficiently and responsibly.
We are pleased to offer bollard lights that could meet the stringent requirements of the Dark Sky standards. This product is designed to provide effective and aesthetically pleasing outdoor illumination while minimizing its impact on the night sky.
Dark Sky lighting standards
To ensure our products comply with Dark Sky standards, we adhere to the following criteria:
Upward Light Ratio (ULR) ≤ 0.5%.
The proportion of light emitted directly upwards must not exceed 0.5%. This minimizes light escaping into the sky, which helps reduce skyglow and its impact on stargazing and the natural night environment.
Color Temperature ≤ 3000K.
CCT of the light should not exceed 3000K. Lower color temperatures (warmer light) are less disruptive to nocturnal wildlife and human circadian rhythms.
Fixed installation or limited adjustable angle.
The installation method should be fixed to prevent changing the light's angle. If the fixture must be adjustable, the angle of adjustment should be limited to a maximum of ±10°. This ensures the light is directed appropriately and does not stray into unwanted areas.
The fixture must be able to be dimmed to 10% of its full power.
This feature allows for adjusting light levels according to need, further reducing unnecessary light pollution during off-peak hours.
There’s an option to add a visor, although this is not mandatory. A visor can be installed to meet specific customer requirements for further control over light direction and spill. With its rounded design, the visor effectively manages backlight and reduces glare, enhancing both visual comfort and ambience.
We ensure that our bollard lights contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly approach to outdoor lighting, preserving the beauty of the night sky and protecting nocturnal ecosystems.
