Recently while having a quick look at the Forbes news site, a group of comparison picture catch my attention . they show the before and after lighting effect of the world’s largest LED street light replacement project (it is said ). see the overview below .

as can be seen from picture above , LED street light have more efficient lighting . furthermore, they only light up the area where should be lit which settled the glare problem of lights and reduced the negetive impact on environment and people's life nearby . LED street lights indeed have some advantages over traditional road lamps .
Low energy consumption
Many retrofit projects have been claimed to significantly reduce energy comsumption.as listed above , it is estimated that in the wake of retrofit with LED street lights it can save at least $7 million in electricity charge and $2.5 million in avoided maintenance costs annually .
Longer lifespan
The projected lifetime of LED street lights is usually 10 to 15 years, two to four times the life of HPS. If realized in practice, the less frequent need to service or replace LED street lights will mean lower maintenance cost.
More accurate color rendering
The color rendering index is the ability of a light source to correctly reproduce the colors of the objects in comparison to an ideal light source. a high color rendering index means that it is easier for drivers to recognize objects. that is to say . with the application of LED street light it can increase safety in some degree .
Quick turn on / off and Immediate restart
unlike many lamps that need some time to heat up when switching on, LED street lights cost less time ,almost in a very short time to turn on and come with full brightness.and they don't have a delay problem of restarting.as a brief power failure or inadvertent turn off occurs ,they also can restart immediately.
ROHS compliance
LED road lights don't contain mercury or lead, and don't release poisonous gases if damaged. they are environmently friendly lights .
Less attractive to nocturnal insects
Nocturnal insects are attracted to ultraviolet light emitted by many conventional light sources. LED street lights are allowed to artificially control the component of emitted light when designed . this can effectively avoid the damage to lights come from the ingress of insect.
Optically efficient lighting equipment: Other types of street lights use a reflector to capture the light emitted upwards from the lamp. Even under the best of conditions, the reflector absorbs some of the light. Also for fluorescent lamps and other lamps with phosphor coated bulbs, the bulb itself absorbs some of the light directed back down by the reflector. The glass cover, called a refractor, helps project the light down on the street in a desired pattern but some light is wasted by being directed up to the sky (light pollution). LED lamp assemblies (panels) can send light in the desired directions without a reflector.
Reduced glare: Directing the light downward onto the roadway reduces the amount of light that is directed into driver's eyes.
Higher light output even at low temperatures: While fluorescent lights are comparably energy efficient, on average they tend to have lesser light output at winter temperatures.
conclusion
Through measuring overall benefit , replacing existing street lights with efficient and long-lasting LED street lights is optimal choice . because this not only can save money on energy and maintenance but also can balance the present input of urban construction fund .this has been the choice for a number of cities which intend to retrofit their street lighting.
