How to Light a Warehouse

How to Light a Warehouse

July

Background info about warehouse

Warehouse lighting is often-met in industrial lighting. There are small warehouses for  small local supermarkets and medium and large warehouses with racks for logistic centers or end users. This article refers to medium warehouse lighting with racks.

Ways to choose suitable lights for warehouses

“Enough” is always the principle to follow when choosing lights. No more, no less. The height of the warehouse or lamp installation and the width between racks are the keys to a suitable light for a warehouse.

For different sizes of warehouses, lighting distribution matters most. Choosing suitable lights is more like choosing a suitable lighting distribution. 120° symmetric lighting distribution will lead to a waist of illuminance in areas where no need for much luminance. To improve the efficiency of lights and luminance, we need to focus the light on what really need to be illuminated, which is the area of the long aisles and the cargo on the racks, so asymmetric beam angles should be used. In this way, a strip PC lens is better than the round one because it shapes like the aisles between racks, can reduce waist and light longer. This kind of lens is very friendly to contractors, fewer lights means less light and wire costs and less labor costs for installation.

Usually the width between racks ranging from 1M to 4M, height from 3M to 14M, 6M to 9M is for most. So asymmetric lenses should depend on the width between racks and the height of the warehouse or lamp installation.

AGC designed several kinds of lighting distributions for warehouses with racks, like 25°*85°, 60°*100°, and 80°*140°, but how do you choose them? Lighting calculations can help make precise decisions, but we can first make a preliminary one by knowing the height of the warehouse or lamp installation and the width between racks. Let’s take LHB09 linear light as an example.

How to select the lens

Let's see how the height of the warehouse or lamp installation and the width between racks influence the lens choice.

25°*85°: 25° is a narrower angle that is suitable for smaller widths of the aisles, like 1.5M to 3M; when the width expands, the angle should be larger. 85° influences the length of aisle that the light can reach, it can cover more if the angle is larger.

Application

Here , we share a warehouse lighting calculation report. It is a replacement project for 77M (L) * 24M (W) small warehouse and production hall in Poland. We use 29 pcs of LHB09 linear light, which is 180lm/m ±5%, RA80 and asymmetric lighting distribution of 80° *140°. Finally we achieves higher uniformity and illuminance up to 300-320 lx based on the required installation height of 6 m. Below are reports shots about this project.
