It is also called variable white, dim-to-white, or custom temperature lighting from different manufacturers. Tunable white lighting enables people to adjust the color of light from warm to neutral to cool in appearance, based on applications, event needs, and occupant preference. White tunable VS dim to warm
There are three basic categories of color-tunable lighting products:
- Dim-to-warm: These products change their color temperature from cool to warm as they are dimmed, similar to incandescent lamps.
- White-tunable: These products can change their color temperature across a range of white light, such as from 2700 K to 6500 K.
- Full-color-tunable: These products can change their color temperature across the entire visible spectrum, including colors other than white
Most people are confused about tunable white and dim to warm. Let’s check out their differences.
Dim to warm lighting mimics the dimming curve of incandescent lights when dimming. So it is also referred to as “incandescent-like” dimming. CCT of these products usually range from 3000K at full output down to as low as 1800K. Dim to warm lighting reduces the color temperature along with the brightness. Therefore, for dim to warm lighting products, only one control signal is needed per group of fixtures. The function of color temperature changing makes dim to warm lighting a popular option for places where need whiter light in the day and warmer light in the evening. But it might be an issue for some users who want to reduce light intensity without changing color temperature.
In contrast, tunable white light simulates natural daylight. ‘Tunable’ can be a color change over the day. By using two sets of phosphor-coated LED primaries, tunable white lighting products allow adjustment of CCT across a defined range from warm to cool. Most importantly, the brightness of tunable white lighting is not related to CCT.
How does tunable white lighting work
Tunable white lighting works by using LED light fixtures that contain two or more colors of LED chips. Typically, tunable white lighting fixtures have both cool white and warm white LED chips.
To better understand the difference in variable white lights, we use CCT (Correlated Color Temperature) to measure the color temperature of light. CCT is measured in degrees Kelvin (K). Within the LED industry, the measurement of CCT ranges from 1800K (candlelight) to 7000K (daylight). The higher the CCT, the cooler the white color. By adjusting the CCT of light sources to mimic natural daylight and circadian rhythms, tunable white lighting is able to provide a more dynamic lighting experience.
